How to Care for Your Invisalign Aligners?

If our orthodontist Dr Mehta has offered you the option of Invisalign aligners to address your orthodontic concerns, then your journey with us has begun. As well as the excitement, there may be some information overload. Do not worry. We are here to answer all your questions.

“So how do I look after my aligners?”

Step 1:

Ensure your aligners do not build up with bacteria. To prevent this buildup, it is best practice to rinse your aligners under some tepid water when you remove them for eating, brushing, playing any contact sports and drinking any liquids other than water. This will ensure that you wash away any saliva that could dry out and cause buildup. Please ensure you do not use hot water as this may distort the aligner.

Step 2:

After you have brushed your teeth morning and night (for at least 2 minutes each time!), rinse your toothbrush free from toothpaste and then lightly brush your aligners as well. Toothpaste will discolour your aligners and change them from clear to cloudy, so we strongly suggest ensuring any remnants of toothpaste are rinsed off before you put brush to aligner.

You do not need to spend any money on expensive cleaning solutions, plain undiluted white vinegar will do just the trick! In order to help your aligners to remain crystal clear, we recommend soaking them once per week for approximately 10-15 minutes in order to ensure they are well maintained.

Step 3:

When you are removing your aligners, ensure you place them in the case provided to you. Never wrap them up in a paper towel or tissue, because you can almost be certain they will end up in the rubbish. Additionally, try to keep them away from any dogs, as they are sure to chew up your aligners.

Step 4:

It is also important that you remember to not only care for your Invisalign aligner, but also care for your teeth! We recommend that you maintain an adequate flossing routine and ensure that you are flossing a minimum of once per day to guarantee your aligners have a clean environment to live in.

By following these steps, you will have the most positive orthodontic experience and give yourself the best opportunity for healthy teeth and a beautiful smile.
