When to see an Orthodontist, rather than a Dentist

Many people get confused as to which oral health care professional to see, however this actually depends on your teeth’s needs.  Both Dentists and Orthodontists play a valuable role in keeping your teeth healthy and they often work together with you to ensure the best smile.

Everyone usually understands that a Dentist takes care of teeth but most people are unsure what an Orthodontist does.  An Orthodontist is a specialist who has three years of additional education from a University and is an expert in straightening teeth.

People see an Orthodontist for particular services, mostly when they are concerned about the alignment of their or their child’s teeth.  As children get older, their teeth may become crooked as they come through.  This can happen for a number of reasons, so it is important to see an Orthodontist at around 8 years of age.  At this age, it is possible to assess the incoming permanent teeth and develop a treatment plan if required.

As crooked teeth can be caused by a lot of different factors, it is possible to have orthodontic treatment at any age.  At an orthodontic practice, you will see people of all ages receiving treatment … kids, teenagers, university students and adults!

You do not need a referral from your dentist to see an Orthodontist.  Contact Mehta Orthodontics at any time to book an appointment.
